Forest inventory without walking the forest

Fifty per cent of the property

It is not laziness but arithmetic. Walking fifty hectares of dense spruce thinning stands thoroughly takes days, not hours. What needs to be found — bark beetle attacks, scattered windthrow in the thinning stands, stem breakage not yet visible from the road — is exactly the kind of damage that disappears into the mass when you survey under time pressure.

Storm Johannes showed this clearly. The large total blowdowns were easy to identify. The scattered, small thinning stand with root rot, and seed trees tipped over at the edge of a clear-cut, took a long time to map fully. Storm Dave, in southern Sweden, repeated the pattern.

The problem does not stop at economics. The Swedish Forestry Act limits how much timber may be left in spruce and pine forest, primarily to keep down the risk of bark beetle outbreaks and attacks by the pine shoot beetle. In a thinning stand with a mean stem of 0.1 to 0.2 cubic metres, the limit of three cubic metres per hectare of spruce is almost impossible to assess in the field without a thorough inventory. Checking it requires running up and down every strip road, and that is work most landowners have neither the time nor the resources for.

Forest inventory by drone: a hundred hectares in thirty minutes

With a drone and AI analysis, the arithmetic changes. A hundred hectares are scanned in thirty minutes of flying. The AI model identifies every damaged tree — windthrow, bark beetle attack, stem breakage — with ninety to ninety-five per cent accuracy per individual. That is comprehensive coverage in a way no field inventory can match at a reasonable amount of effort.

Arboair's platform also clusters the damage geographically. The landowner does not see a list of individual trees but clear zones: here are the concentrations, this is where you should start. That documentation is shared directly with the contractor through a map link on their phone, or straight into the harvester's on-board computer. The harvester operator knows where to drive and what to deal with, without having taken a single step into the stand concerned. In practice it is a finished tract plan, automated and delivered fast.

Who benefits

A landowner with twenty to fifty hectares or more suddenly gains control over land that was previously hard to survey. Managers and forestry advisers can give better service to more clients in less time. And timber buyers, often the ones ordering the inventory, can offer documentation that previously required resources they rarely had.

What changes is not who makes the decisions. It is what those decisions are based on. Human expertise — the timber buyer's local knowledge, the adviser's judgement, the machine operator's experience — is freed up for the assessments where it is actually needed. Not for counting trees along a forest road.
